Bullying

Bullying Is a Big Problem

Bullying DealingwithBullying

Every day thousands of teens wake up afraid to go to school.Bullying is a problem that affects millions of students, and it haseveryone worried, not just the kids on its receiving end.

Yet becauseparents, teachers, and other adults don't always see it, they may notunderstand how extreme bullying can get.

Bullying is when a person is picked on over and over again by anindividual or group with more power, either in terms of physicalstrength or social standing.

Two of the main reasons people are bullied are because of appearanceand social status.
Bullies pick on the people they think don't fit in,maybe because of how they look, how they act (for example, kids who areshy and withdrawn), their race or religion, or because the bulliesthink their target may be gay or lesbian.

Some bullies attack their targets physically, which can meananything from shoving or tripping to punching or hitting, or evensexual assault. Others use psychological control or verbal insults toput themselves in charge. For example, people in popular groups orcliques often bully people they categorize as different by excludingthem or gossiping about them (psychological bullying). They may alsotaunt or tease their targets (verbal bullying).

Verbal bullying can also involve sending cruel instant or emailmessages or even posting insults about a person on a website —practices that are known as cyberbullying.

Types of Bullying

Bullying Boysfightingpix

Did you knowthat bullying isn't just someone punching you in the face or a bullycalling you a name that you don't like? Bullying is a lot more thanthat. There are even different types of bullying.

Different Kinds of Bullying

1. Physical bullying includesany physical contact that would hurt or injure a person like hitting, kicking, punching, etc. Taking something that belongs to someone elseand destroying it would also be considered a type of physical bullying. For example, if someone was walking down the street and someone came upto them and shoved them to the ground, that would be physical bullying. In elementary and middle schools, 30.5% of all bullying is physical.

2. Verbal bullyingis name-calling, making offensive remarks, or joking about a person'sreligion, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or the way theylook. For example, if there was a group of kids who made fun of anotherkid because he couldn't run as fast as everyone else, it would be anexample of verbal bullying. 46.5% of all bullying in schools is theverbal type. Verbal aggression is when a bully teases someone. It canalso include a bully making verbal threats of violence or aggressionagainst someone's personal property.

3. Indirect bullyingincludes spreading rumors or stories about someone, telling othersabout something that was told to you in private, and excluding othersfrom groups. An example would be if you started a rumor that a boy inyour class likes playing with dolls, and if the reason that you made upthe story was because you thought it was funny. This would be indirectbullying. Indirect bullying accounts for 18.5% of all bullying.

4. Social alienationis when a bully excludes someone from a group on purpose. It alsoincludes a bully spreading rumors, and also making fun of someone bypointing out their differences.

5. Intimidation is when a bully threatens someone else and frightens that person enough to make him or her do what the bully wants.

6. Cyberbullyingis done by sending messages, pictures, or information using electronicmedia, computers (email & instant messages), or cell phones (textmessaging & voicemail). For instance, if you sent a picture of asnake in an email to a person because you know that they are afraid ofsnakes, that would be an example of cyberbullying.

According to asurvey done in 2003 only 4% of bullying is listed as "other types" andthis would include cyberbullying. Even though this number seems small, the growth of this type of bullying is going up fast because of thespread of technology around the world.

Examples of Cyberbullying

Bullying Examplessmall

Cyberbullying takes many forms.
A US study revealed that one-thirdof cyberbullying incidents took place via instant messaging, or IM, inwhich users chat electronically in real time (Finkelhor, Mitchell & Wolak 2000,23).

Close behind were chat room exchanges on the web (32 per cent ofincidents), followed by e-mail (19 per cent).

Slightly more than threequarters of the youth were logged on at home when the bullying tookplace.

Explore some real-life examples of cyberbullying to get a fullerflavour of the kinds of bullying that takes place through electronicmeans.

David Knight of Burlington, Ontario

A web site about teenager David Knight of Burlington, Ontario hadbeen active for several months before a classmate told him about it.

"Iwent there and sure enough there's my photo on this web site saying'Welcome to the web site that makes fun of Dave Knight' and just pagesof hateful comments directed at me and everyone in my family.

" Whoevercreated the web site asked others to join in, posting lewd, sexualcomments and smearing David's reputation. "I was accused of being apedophile.

I was accused of using the date rape drug on little boys,"says David. Along with the web site, there were nasty e-mails too.

"Here's an e-mail, 'You're gay, don't ever talk again, no one likesyou, you're immature and dirty, go wash your face.'"

Amanda Marcuson of Birmingham, Michigan

Amanda Marcuson, 14, of Birmingham, Michigan, reported some girls inher eighth-grade class for stealing a pencil case filled with makeupthat belonged to her.

As soon as she got home, the instant messagesstarted popping up on her computer screen. She was a tattletale and aliar, they said.

Shaken, she typed back, ''You stole my stuff!'' Shewas a ''stuck-up bitch,'' came the instant response in the box on thescreen, followed by a series of increasingly ugly insults.

Thatevening, Amanda went to a basketball game with her family. But thebarrage of electronic insults did not stop. Like a lot of otherteenagers, Amanda has her Internet messages automatically forwarded toher cell phone, and by the end of the game she had received 50 - thelimit of its capacity.

''It seems like people can say a lot worsethings to someone online than when they're actually talking to them,''said Amanda. The girls never said another word to her in person.

Ghyslain Raza of Trois-Rivières, Quebec

Ghyslain Raza, a 15-year-old boy from Trois-Rivières, Quebec, isperhaps the most famous victim of cyberbullying.

After making a film ofhimself emulating a Star Wars fight scene wielding a golf ballretriever as a light saber, he became an unwilling celebrity after thefilm was posted on the Internet by some classmates.

Millions downloadedthe two-minute clip and the media dubbed him the "Star Wars kid."Ghyslain was so wounded by the unflattering attention that he has beenunder psychiatric care and finished the 2004 school year at a childpsychiatry ward. His parents have launched a lawsuit.
