28 More Exceptionally Useful Photoshop Shortcuts


Essential Photoshop Shortcut Commands

• F (Cycle Screen Modes) — Switch between normal
  screen, full screen with task bar without title bar, and full screen
  with black background. Works great when used in conjunction with Tab to hide toolbars — maximum working space, no distractions.
  
• X (Switch Colors) — Swap your foreground and background colors. Very handy when working with masks.
  
• D (Default Colors) — Reset your foreground and background colors to black and white, respectively.
  
• Ctrl + ‘+’/'-’ (Zoom In/Out) — Quickly zoom in or out without changing your current tool.
  
• Alt + Mouse Scroll (Zoom In/Out) — Fastest way to zoom — scroll up to zoom in, and scroll down to zoom out.
  
• Ctrl + Alt + Z (Step Back) — Ctrl + Z is OK if you catch a mistake immediately after it happens, but this command will continue to march its way up the history tree.
  
• Ctrl + S (Save) — You should get in the habit of just hitting this combo on impulse about every 5 to 10 minutes. Also use Ctrl + Alt + Shift + S to bring up the save for web dialog.
  
• Ctrl + Alt + Shift + N (New Layer No Dialog) — Quickly insert a new empty layer on top of the active layer. Get rid of the Alt key to bring up the new layer dialog for more options.
  

Useful Photoshop Shortcut Commands

• Shift + Click Mask (Enable/Disable Layer Mask) —
  When working with masks it’s typically done in small increments.
  Disabling the mask allows you to check the results of your masking
  against the original.
  
• Alt + Click Mask (Toggle Mask Visibility) — Doing
  this will bring up the mask as a grayscale image so you can see what
  you’re working with. Useful if you have areas that need to be filled in
  or smoothed out.
  
• Ctrl + Click Mask (Load Mask As Selection) —
  Selects the white part of the mask (grays are partially selected).
  Useful if you want to duplicate a mask or it’s inverse. Using Ctrl + Click on a layer without a mask will select the non-transparent pixels in that layer.
  
• Ctrl + J (New Layer Via Copy) — Can be used to
  duplicate the active layer into a new layer. If a selection is made,
  this command will only copy the selected area into the new layer.
  
• Caps Lock (Toggle Cross Hairs) — Switch between
  the standard tool icon and a set of precision cross hairs. Useful for
  spot-on selections.
  
• Shift + Backspace (Fill Dialog) — Good time saver when working with masks. Also, use the Ctrl + Backspace to fill with background color and Alt + Backspace to fill with foreground color.
  
• Ctrl + H (Hide Selection Lines) — When working
  with selections, use this command to hide the “marching ants” while
  keeping the selection.
  
• Ctrl + I (Invert Selection) — Select the opposite of what is already selected. Also a good tool when working with mask creation.
  
• Ctrl + D (Deselect) — After working with your selection, use this combo to discard it.
  
• Side Note: When working with selections, they can
  be applied to a layer as a mask simply by adding a new layer mask using
  the little box-with-a-circle-inside icon at the bottom of the layer
  palette. This also works with adjustment layers by automatically
  applying the selection to the mask.
  

Handy Photoshop Shortcut Commands

• Ctrl + G (Group Layers) — This command groups selected layers in the layer tree. Adding Shift to this combo will ungroup layers when the grouped layer is selected.
  
• Ctrl + A (Select All) — Creates a selection around the entire canvas.
  
• Ctrl + T (Free Transform) — Brings up the free transform tool for resizing, rotating, and skewing the image using a dragable outline.
  
• Ctrl + E (Merge Layers) — Merges selected layer
  with the layer directly below it. If multiple layers are selected, only
  those will be merged.
  
• Crtl + Shift + E (Merge Visible) — Merges all
  visible layers into one. Not recommended practice in typical photo
  editing because you’ll lose layer information.
  
• Ctrl + Alt + E (Stamp Down) — Merges all selected layers into one new layer. Add the Shift
  modifier to this combo and you’ll get a new layer containing a merged
  representation of all visible layers (handy for sharpening adjustments)
  
• Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R (Rotate Arbitrary Dialog) —
  bring up the rotate dialog to straighten out your horizon… but it’s not
  typically used since we all take perfect photos, right?
  
• Side Note: Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) has the ability
  to straighten photos before they ever make it into Photoshop. When
  straightening, you draw a line you’d like as your horizontal and ACR
  will take care of the rotation and crop for you.
  
• CTRL + ALT + DEL (Kill Photoshop) — Quite useful when Photoshop takes your computer hostage. Must have used the Ctrl + S command prior to the hostile takeover in order to prevent mental breakdown.

Photoshop Keyboard Shortcuts - Tips & Resources

In
this tutorial I'll show you how to use Photoshop CS and CS2 to change
your keyboard shortcuts, how to save sets of customized keyboard
shortcuts, and how to print out your customized sets. If you have an
earlier version of Photoshop, at the end of the tutorial you'll find
some helpful tips and a list of sites where you can download
collections of Photoshop shortcuts in PDF form.

How To Change Photoshop Keyboard Shortcuts (CS & CS2 Only)
To create your own shortcuts in Photoshop CS or CS2, go to the Edit Menu and select Keyboard Shortcuts. The Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box serves as a shortcut editor, and includes all the commands that support shortcuts.

To modify the keyboard shortcuts you'll have to create a new keyboard shortcut set by clicking on the New Keyboard Set
button (the icon to be clicked is immediately to the left of the trash
can icon). You'll then be asked to name and save your shortcut set.Now select a heading from the dropdown menu on the left that says Shortcuts For. This allows you to view all of the Photoshop commands in either the Application Menus, the Palette Menus, or the Tools.

Once
you've selected a heading you can search through the contents to locate
the command you’d like to change or create a shortcut for. Commands
that already have shortcuts will be indicated in the menu. You can
change these if you’d prefer by clicking on the shortcut, typing in a
new shortcut, and pressing Accept at the top right side of the dialog box.

To make a totally new shortcut, click on the blank space beside the
menu command and type in the shortcut you’d like to use. To save it
click on the Add Shortcut button.

The
hardest part here is finding a key combination that's not already
taken. Even the Keyboard Shortcut command has a shortcut (it's
Shift-Option-Command-K for Mac and Shift-Alt-Ctrl-K for Win).

How To Remove Shortcuts From A Command Or A Tool
Choose Edit> Keyboard Shortcuts. In the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box, select the command or the tool name whose shortcut you want to delete, and then click Delete Shortcut.

How To Delete A Set Of Shortcuts
Choose Edit> Keyboard Shortcuts. In the Set pop-up menu, choose the shortcut set that you want to delete. Then click the Delete icon (or the Delete Shortcut button), and OK to exit the dialog box.

Create Project-Specific Custom Workspaces (CS2 Only)
Photoshop
lets you create custom workspaces that display just the palettes you
need for a specific project, and in CS2 a new customized workspace can
also include one of your keyboard shortcut sets.


Choose Window> Workspace> Save Workspace. The option is listed under Capture. Just click on Keyboard Shortcuts and the active set will be saved with the new customized worskspace.

Context-sensitive Menus (they live in your mouse...!)
In
addition to using keyboard shortcuts, you can also access many commands
using context-sensitive menus. Context-sensitive menus only display
commands that are relevant to an active tool, a selection, or a
palette. To display a context-sensitive menu, right-click (Win) or
Control-click (Mac) in a document window or palette.

For example, when you have a file with layers, clicking on the document
in this way will bring up a contextual menu filled with layer options.
This saves you a trip to the palette flyout.

Save Them, Print Them, Learn Them
To print your keyboard shortcuts, go to Edit, Keyboard Shortcuts andclick Summarize.
Photoshop will then save your shortcuts to an html document that can be
opened in any text editor or web browser. From there you can print a
copy to keep as a reference. Sweet.

Photoshop 6 Shortcuts & Photoshop 7 Shortcuts
Although
the option of creating your own shortcuts is only available in the
latest versions, don't despair. In earlier versions many of the
commands already have their own shortcuts set in the program. To learn
more about these, go Help> Photoshop Help to launch the Photoshop Help pages.

In Photoshop 7 or lower, you can find the shortcut commands in the Help
menu's table of contents on the left-hand side of the page. Just scroll
down to the very bottom. Macintosh and Windows each have their own
index, and offer slightly different shortcuts for the same commands.
Click on any of the headings and you'll be given a list of available
shortcuts.
Since the help pages are launched in a browser, you also have the option of printing these pages to use as a reference guide.

It is proven that by using software shortcuts can
boost up productivity. Here are 30 secret Photoshop shortcuts that I’ve
learned from years of experience. Well, what I mean by "secret" is that
these shortcuts are not documented in the menus. Keep reading and you

   Drag selection
   With the Marquee tool, drag on
   the document (do not release the mouse yet), now hold down Spacebar, it
   will let you drag the undefined selection.

   Navigate the document left or right
   Hold down
   the Cmd key and scroll up or down allows you to navigate the document
   left or right. For example, hold down Cmd + scroll up will navigate to
   right.
   
   
   
3. 
   Browse the font list
   Put your cursor in the font list dropdown, you can browse the font list by pressing arrow Up or Down key.

   Scale font size
   Select the text that you want to scale the font size, press Cmd + Shift + > or < to increase / decrease font size.

   Zoom with the scroll wheel
   You can zoom in / out by Cmd + Opt + scroll up or down.

   Drag to adjust numberic value
   Mouseover the

    If you need to show / hide
    more than one layers, instead of clicking one by one, you can click on

    press Cmd + Opt + 4 will load Alpha channel 1.

    Press Tab to toggle tool panels.

    Precise cursor

    Navigate the tool list
    You can navigate through

    Increase / decrease brush size

    tool selected, you can increase / decrease the brush size by pressing [

    pressing the number keys (ie. 1 = 10%, 2 = 20%…). When you have the
    brush tool selected, pressing the number keys will adjust the brush

    Duplicate layer
    There are several shortcuts to duplicate layers.
    1. You can hold down Cmd + Opt + drag to duplicate the active layer.
    2. Cmd + Opt + arrow keys (Up, Down, Left, Right).
    3. Cmd + J will duplicate the active layer in exact position.
    4. Hold down Opt + drag within the Layers palette can also duplicate layers.

    Copy visible and paste in a new layer
    Press Cmd + Opt + Shift + E will copy the visible layers and paste in a new layer.

    Change workspace background
    By default Photoshop use grey for the workspace background color. You can change that by:
    1. select your favorite color
    2. choose the Paint Bucket tool
    3. Hold down Shift + click on the working area (outside the document area)
    
    
    Update: right-click on the workspace area to get a
    dropdown menu - allows you to set the background to black, grey, or a
    custom color (commented by Todd Patrick).

    Fill background or foreground color
    Opt + Delete (Backspace) = fill the layer with foreground color.
    Cmd + Delete (Backspace) = fill the layer with background color

• In some dialog boxes, holding the Opt key will turn the “Cancel” button into a most useful “Reset”. (by Miguel Tavares)
  
• To stroke a path, first select the path, then change to the brush
  tool, select a brush, and type Enter or Return. This works with all of

• To turn a path into a selection, type Command-Enter or
  Command-Return (doesn’t matter what tool is selected). If there is
  already a selection, then Command-Shift-Return will add your path’s
  shape to the selection, Command-Option-Return will subtract it, and

• If you are adding a “Drop Shadow” layer effect, and you have the
  Layer Style dialog open to the Drop Shadow settings, you can move the
  shadow around by clicking and dragging in the image. This also works

  can also adjust the Gradient Overlay, Pattern Overlay, and Satin

Photoshop > Keyboard Shortcuts


Keyboard Shortcuts are keystrokes used to quickly invoke a command.
As well, shortcuts usually (but not always) involve a modifier key such
as Ctrl/Cmd, Alt/Opt, or Shift. For example, instead of choosing Select » Deselect from the menus, you could simply press Ctrl/Cmd+D.
Keyboard shortcuts can improve your efficiency, and in some cases, they
can even invoke commands that might not otherwise be available (e.g.,
zooming while a dialog box is open, or inserting a Select forward layer command into an action).
One of Photoshop's strengths is that it makes extensive use of keyboard
shortcuts; but, there are so many that it's difficult to remember them
all. So, I've created a "cheat sheet" that's organized by menu, as well
as alphabetically by key. These "cheat sheets" are available in the
